JB Charleston sends two C-17s with relief supplies to Louisiana in response to Hurricane Zach

JOINT BASE CHARLESTON, S.C.-- Aircrews from the 437th Airlift Wing flew two C-17 Globemaster III aircraft with relief supplies to Alexandria, Louisiana, in response to Hurricane Zach June 18, 2024.

Crews from the 14th, 15th and 16th Airlift Squadrons flew from here with 30.6 tons of supplies to Alexandria International Airport, Louisiana, which were offloaded and delivered to emergency shelters around the state.

“Natural disasters are an unfortunate reality and our thoughts are with everyone who has been affected by Hurricane Zach,” said Air Force Col. James Ero, 437th AW commander. “Our team quickly answered the call and will continue to provide supplies as necessary in the coming days.”

The aircrews responded to being called upon within three hours and the mission was completed in conjunction with continuing daily combat sustainment missions to the U.S. Central Command theater of operations.

Ero said he was proud to see airmen demonstrate flexibility and eagerness to help their fellow countrymen in a time of need.

“We’ve had crews on alert for days to ensure we are ready to support relief efforts after this storm,” said Air Force Lt. Col. Eric Pratt, 437th Operations Group deputy commander. “It’s humbling to see how they’ve surged to help out their fellow Americans.”

All crew members were excited to assist in the relief mission, said Air Force Senior Airman Justin Reign, a crew member aboard one of the C-17s. He said he was especially anxious about helping his home state of Louisiana.

“Being from Louisiana, I jumped at the opportunity to do this,” said Reign. “I may not be able to be home to help my family and friends, but being able to provide supplies and relief to others in need is rewarding all on its own.”
