Base officials to host groundbreaking ceremony for additional housing
JOINT BASE PEARL HARBOR-HICKAM, Hawaii-- A new housing groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled at 10 a.m. July 8, 2024, at Onizuka Village on base.
Dolores L. Hartung, the base's housing director, said the 18-month construction on the 16-family housing units is scheduled to commence after the ceremony and is anticipated to help alleviate the housing shortage that has caused a seven-month waitlist for families.
The additional family housing units were designed for families with two or more kids and will feature a playground at the center of the quadrangle. Each unit will have three bedrooms, 1.5 bathrooms, central air conditioning and heating, washer and dryer hookups, a dishwasher and a storage shed.
“The support our military members get from their families is essential to mission success,” said Hartung. “With that in mind, we want to do everything we can to improve the quality of their lives.”
Four companies bid on the project and Aloha Builders won the $5 million contract to construct additional family housing units.
“The bidding process was thorough,” said Army Lt. Col. Timothy D. Reichmann, chief of the family housing branch of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Pacific Division. “We are confident that the taxpayers will get good value from the project.”
