2 people are dead, 1 other injured in fire at U.S. Army Signal School Detachment (Follow-up release)

FORT MEADE, M.d., U.S. Army Pfc. Lou Pineda and Karen Smith have died after a fire broke out at the U.S. Army Signal School Detachment on Sept. 13, 2024.

Both Pineda and Smith were transported to the University of Maryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center; Pineda was pronounced dead on arrival and Smith died later that day. 

Another soldier, who was taken to Johns Hopkins Hospital, is now in stabilized condition. 

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, and no further details are available at this time.
